About Monbulk · Dandenong Ranges VIC 3793
A hiding place in the hills.
The name is believed to come from the Wurundjeri word Monbolok, “hiding place in the hills”.
Europeans first called it the Dandenong Forest Village Settlement. The town was laid out in 1893 as 76 farms on ten-acre blocks, and the red soils have grown fruit, vegetables and flowers ever since. Nurseries and flower growing are still the town's biggest local industries.
Tucked into the fertile eastern valley of the Dandenong Ranges, Monbulk sits five to ten minutes from Sherbrooke Forest and Grants Picnic Ground in Kallista, the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden in Olinda, Mt Dandenong, Silvan Reservoir, and the Puffing Billy Railway between Belgrave and Emerald Lake — linked daily by the Route 663 bus between Belgrave and Lilydale stations.
